In all my life I have never given my competition much energy because I have believed that the more I create what I am doing, the less I have to compete. So how does that work? I remember being asked to go down and coach a Car Sales Team in the country. When I got there I checked out the main office and all I could see was a wall full of the statistics on how the other car dealers are doing. Just imagine for a moment how much time and energy was put into that. Now imagine if that time and energy was put directly into their company how different their service would be. I asked why those statistics were so relevant. The manager replied that that is how the company has done it for many years and the Owner was her father. What was her point of difference???
I was walking back from the beach this morning and I saw up to four coffee shops open for business at 6.30am. How do you make your coffee shop successful? One coffee shop always has more patrons than all the others combined, WHY? It may not have anything to do with the great coffee that they serve. It may have everything to do with the other services that they provide that they can add to the coffee. They open from 5,30am. They have a brilliant selection of healthy and non-healthy breakfast options that are quick and very reasonably priced. Every seat faces the ocean and yet it is out on the footpath.
There is a street in the Gold Coast that has a row of restaurants, but one restaurant has them lining up out the door WHY? Do they serve the best Chinese food? Or do they offer everyone that comes in a FREE meal on their birthday and a bottle of wine?
There are so many examples I could give you. At the end of the day we need to find our point of difference. What is the one thing that you could do to achieve success in your business life today. If we are paid on the service we provide, what service are you offering and what is your unique selling point? Be different than your competition.
