That was the question asked this week on the Living Consciously.TV show that we did last Saturday afternoon in the USA and Sunday morning Australian time.
Fear is one of the Basic Survival Emotions. The purpose of this primary emotion is to assist us to trigger a response that may help us survive in the face of danger.
FEAR actually helps us run away. It’s like all the adrenaline goes into our legs and arms and we have nothing left for our brain. I remember being in Africa and on this three month Safari. I always walked ahead of the Safari truck and they would pick me up. I wanted to see so much more, that stopping for lunch was often boring for me. On this one day a man presented himself from the bushes and shared all his glory with an open coat. He was walking toward me and I ran. I was amazed at how fast my legs could move like I had no control over the pace and something else inside of me took over … FEAR ….Absolute FEAR. I arrived at the next village and I was drawing pictures in the dirt to explain what trouble I was in as my French Language had absolutely run out with the Fear in my legs. I was eventually rescued by the Safari truck. In that case Fear I used FEAR to survive.
Even though there is a positive survival purpose to this emotion of Fear, it may also create an inappropriate response, particularly in modern society, where survival is not usually at stake. This response can quite often be recognised when going for a goal and you feel something is preventing you from achieving it. I so desperately wanted to be a teacher of NLP. I studied very hard and practiced daily. I was asked by my teacher to teach an important part of the course to her next group of students and I became terrified. I just wanted to run away like I did in Africa. The teacher asked me what was going on and I remember saying “It’s not perfect yet”.
So it’s interesting that in modern society we can have the same physical response to a situation as if we were on a Safari and felt we were in need of survival. While the fear felt on a Safari created the urge to run, the fear in public speaking can prevent us from remembering what we want to say.
So how do we become Fearless? By conquering one small fear at a time until you get the process. If we spend all of our energy on how we can’t do something….then we won’t. I have come to understand that if you spend ALL your energy on working out HOW YOU CAN DO SOMETHING then you have all the FAITH and very little to no fear on making it happen. It becomes a faster, more efficient way to live and so much more can be accomplished.
I think an important point here is to consider that the universe would never give us anything we could not achieve.
ENJOY IT ALL.
